MI(SA) is a three-part performance consisting of the Missa Luba, the Misa Criolla and a new South African mass written by Antjie Krog with music by Antoni Schonken: Die nuwe verbond – ‘n Misorde vir die universum. Krog and Schonken conduct a conversation with the beloved Missa Luba and Misa Criolla. Marthinus Basson combines rites and liturgies to create a ground-breaking unique South African soundscape, primarily in Afrikaans but also in Latin, Greek, English, Xhosa and old Khoi-san. Krog states that it is a “mass to assuage the harm that people inflict upon each other and the planet”. The MI(SA) is not simply sung by the Cape Town Opera Choir – their individual stories, and where they come from, form part of the mass.
